[Xfire] Chatteox: Hello and welcome to the Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption Developer chat! The Devs from Petroglyph will now introduce himself and start answering your questions.
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Hello, my name is Michael Fetterman - and I am the Producer at Petroglyph for the Forces of Corruption expansion.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Hello there --- I am Eric Kearns --- Lead Artist from FOC and senior artist here at Petro
Petroglyph Chris: Hi There,
My name is Chris Rubyor and I am the Lead Design on Forces of Corruption. Thanks for coming to our FOC chat!
[Petroglyph] SAGEKING: Whats up everyone? I'm Kevin Yu, Petroglyph's Community Manager! Thanks for joining us!
Petroglyph Chris: Question: DS_2LT_Mighty88 SGF-4 DO: Will you be able to use Corruption to convert Enemy Units and/or Buildings?
Answer: Corruption is the main mechanic at the galactic level. During tactical, Tyber can bribe units to fight for him (like an ATAT).
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: [AoHx]Fr0z3n-316-[CSR]DN: I read that the dev team for Forces of Corruption had 14-18 people. Are these the same people that created the "core game" of Empire at War?
Answer: Most of the core team was involved except for some of the team moving to P-02. I was one of the core guys in EAW and there were 3 artists and one UI guy for FOC
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Surferdude: Question-Will it be a multiplayer game at all or just single player?
Answer: Multiplayer has been enhaced to support mirrored matches, location selection, ingame clan support, larger maps, and REPLAYS. Lots of good stuff.
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: DS_SFC_A2K09: What faction do you think will be played more, now with the new added fraction?
Answer: I think we'll see a lot of people playing the new faction... it really does feel different compared to the Rebel and Imperial factions.
[Petroglyph] SAGEKING: Question: [AoHx]Fr0z3n-316-[CSR]DN: If you wanted to, could a player make a "replay game" where you could watch your replays with friends?
Answer: Yup you can share saved replays with friends to talk strategy or just view what you did right or wrong. Replays are a great way of learning from the top players as well! We'll have a bunch of them linked at our new community site: http://www.petroglyphgames.com/community
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: DS_2LT_Mighty88 SGF-4 DO: What is the Power/Efficiency of the new faction in comparison to the existing factions?
Answer: The consortium has some higher cost associated with its units but the damage they can do is super... the health and armor will be reduced from what I've played so your going to have to find a balance with money and attack strategies
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: [AoHx]Fr0z3n-316-[CSR]DN: I read that the dev team for Forces of Corruption had 14-18 people. Are these the same people that created the "core game" of Empire at War?
Answer: That's correct. The expansion team was about 14-18 people, and it was comprised of developers who both worked on the original EAW and who were new to Petroglyph.
Petroglyph Chris: Question: DS_SFC_A2K09: From what I have seen in the screen shots, it looks like the money requirements for the new faction are higher... If it cost more, is the income money going to match? Will there be a different income to buy ratio?
Answer: The Consortium units/structures/upgrades cost far more than the Empire and Rebels. Corruption at the galactic level is key in bringing in the resources to fuel your galactic war machine.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: BoB-J | djchooch: Will the graphic capability also be upgraded in the games expansion or will it run on the same engine?
Answer: same engine but with some small improvements to the terrain editor in regards to texture painting (invisible terrain!). You will see some floating platforms and such that were made with this tech. Other than the engine remaining the same the quality of terrain is improved with better normal maps
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Will heroes lose power in the game? Since they were very powerful in hte first one, for example, Darth Vader, will he be fixed?
Answer: Not really, but we have rebalanced the heroes to compensate for the new ones added with forces of corruption. Did I mention Obiwan now has Jedi Mind Trick?
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: BoB-J | djchooch: Will the graphic capability also be upgraded in the games expansion or will it run on the same engine?
Answer: The engine that we used for the expansion is the same that was used for the original EAW, but we made a tremendous amount of improvements with regard to performance and its capabilities in general. Expect to see both better visuals and performance in the expansion.
Petroglyph Chris: Question: 5Ronin¦ ïmķřǻžịể ®: With 3 factions now, does this mean we can have 3-way Galactic Conquest battle?
Answer: Yes, but only for single-player. During multiplayer games it is still 1vs1.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: GoldenEye`: What is the most rewarding aspect for you when developing a game?
Answer: Ultimately seeing and hearing you guys loving what we make is first for me. Other than that seeing a team pull together and make a single game that does well is always a big feat. Getting to play what you make is rewarding too when you have a good time playing!
[Petroglyph] SAGEKING: Question: GoldenEye`: What is the most rewarding aspect for you when developing a game?
Answer: Seeing the fans take the game to new levels - Awesome Mods -Epic Gameplay in Replays -the amount of fans on the forums and community sites!
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Felix: Is there going to be an unlocked land camera, allowing a full view of the battle field from any perspective??
Answer: The camera will be the same as eaw.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Foshjedi2004: What was the most Demanding aspect of the 3 year development cycle for the game and Expansion Pack?
Answer: It's amazing what we have done in less than 3 years! A fully playable game and expansion from complete scratch. Wow. I still think about the development teams I've been on in the past and this is the best team of people ever. We get tons done in short order and its due to professionalism and a great management team who can keep us on track
[Petroglyph] SAGEKING: Question: Foshjedi2004: Which Unit do you usually send into battle first? Answer: Definitely the Crazy Ewoks.
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: Foshjedi2004: Which part of the new Pathfinding ability do you enjoy the most? Which Unit do you usually send into battle first?
Answer: Stealth units! Take them in as your path-finder, get close to the enemy base - and unload ;)
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Foshjedi2004: Which part of the new Pathfinding ability do you enjoy the most? Which Unit do you usually send into battle first?
Answer: Usually the fasted unit I can build. Hehe
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Foshjedi2004: Which part of the new Pathfinding ability do you enjoy the most? Which Unit do you usually send into battle first?
Answer: It's great to be able to finally designate a scout and minimize your losses. For space I always use Frigates and for land, heroes always work well.
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: [MSAS] >> General_Tao100: How does the second deathstar work?
Answer: The new deathstar is similar to the first one, except that it now has the ability to destroy both ships and planets. I believe that the Rebels also have more ways to counter the DS2 in the expansion as well.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Xfire] Artaxs: There is only one thing that I look for in today's Star Wars Games -- Do I get to kill the Gungans?? ;)
Answer: you mean you didnt kill them on Naboo in EAW? :)
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Given that some Underworld ships can cloak themselves. will there be ways to reveal stealthed ships? Whats to prevent a cloaked battleforce from launching a sudden raid on the station? Will they at least uncloak when they start firing?
Answer: Fighters like A-wings and Tie Scouts can reveal cloaked units, also, cloaking does have a duration so they can't hide forever.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Zekks: Do you think that this game would be appropriate for a beginner/casual gamer who just wants to start playing video games?
Answer: I think it's pretty easy to follow once you get the basics down in the tutorial. Its a bit more light than some RTS games
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Zekks: Do you think that this game would be appropriate for a beginner/casual gamer who just wants to start playing video games?
Answer: Of course! We've gone to great lengths to include some very informative tutorials and pace game-play during the singleplayer campaign.
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: sp0rK: Will this game be Vista compatible? Are you excited about the new opportunities that will come along with Vista?
Answer: We have done some limited testing with Vista, and it appears to work without many (if any) issue. In either case I think we would make sure that when Vista is released that we remain compatible. Yes! We're thrilled with the opportunity to work with Vista in the future, considering all of the new Games for Windows features that will be integrated into it.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Night: On the screenshots it shows people riding the rancors how did they actually obtain the power to ride a rancor?
Answer: Nightsisters can tame rancors on Dathomir. Nightsisters will be the ones riding them since they are force sensitive and can use force powers
[Petroglyph] SAGEKING: Question: Zekks: Do you think that this game would be appropriate for a beginner/casual gamer who just wants to start playing video games?
Answer: Definitely, I've known a lot of people who played this game as their first RTS and loved it. Everything is pretty intuitive, even when you select units and use specials, its all on one screen.
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: [Xfire] Artaxs: There is only one thing that I look for in today's Star Wars Games -- Do I get to kill the Gungans?? ;)
Answer: Forces of Corruption - Meesa Gonna Die
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: BoB-J | djchooch: Do space ships have weak spots? Meaning if you ambush from the back with lets say a tie squadron will it do more damage?
Answer: Chris can answer this better but I think all capital ships are more vulnerable from the back but the Kedalbe Cruiser on the Consortium side has Mass Driver weapons on the back making it tough to handle
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Night: On the screenshots it shows people riding the rancors how did they actually obtain the power to ride a rancor?
Answer: Night Sisters come to battle with Rancors. They are considered pets on Dathomir. For a powerful Night Sister like Silri, she can summon her Rancor into battle as an ability.
[Petroglyph] SAGEKING: Question: BoB-J | djchooch: Do space ships have weak spots? Meaning if you ambush from the back with lets say a tie squadron will it do more damage?
Answer: They're weak spots depend on what type of damage you want to do. If you want to cripple their capital ship while still stunting their pop cap, u take out the engines. If you want to stop them from bypassing your shields, you take out their missiles or mass driver guns. There isn't a specific spot you shoot to kill the ship quicker, just its abilities.
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: Which of the new and exciting units in FoC do you think will make the biggest impact multiplayer-wise?
Answer: I personally like the canderous and vengeance... mass drivers are the cure for shields ;)
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Which of the new and exciting units in FoC do you think will make the biggest impact multiplayer-wise?
Answer: The addition of Yoda is going make people happy! Imperial lovers should keep Dark Troopers handy. They pack some punch and fly! Consortium lovers will find the Canderous Tank the unit to build. ;)
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: DS_SFC_A2K09: What faction unit will compared to a T4-b and At-At walker? What are the pro's and con's to this Unit?
Answer: Canderous Tank and its ability to fire on ground and air units
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: What is the average length of a multiplayer game? How did you come to this time?
Answer: I think the average MP time is around 20-40 minutes on average for the skirmish modes, but it really depends on the number of players. The ability to share credits and the nature of the team game can keep things pretty intense for long periods of time in most large games.
[Petroglyph] SAGEKING: Question: Which of the new and exciting units in FoC do you think will make the biggest impact multiplayer-wise?
Answer: The vengeance class has quickly become a favorite with its mass driver guns which bypass shields and have a high rate of fire. Additionally, Crusader Corvettes allow for great protection against missiles against your capital ships. Fighters too have a renewed use in multiplayer, especially with the firepower of TIE Defenders & B-wings.
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Kalen: When designing FoC, what did you do differently than you did when designing EaW?
Answer: It's not that we did things differently, we had the luxury of having a shipped game, so it was easy to incorporate features the fans the wanted. Creating the new faction and story took some time, but like most dev processes, we went through many ideas and concepts until we arrived with the Consortium.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: [AoHx]Fr0z3n-316-[CSR]DN: I know that about 12 new planets were added to the expansion, what can we expect to see on those planets? Answer: Yes there are new ones. Felucia --- you will find deadly plants for infantry and some height changes in the map Utapau --- a giant hole. Making use of some nice terrain painting with invisible mesh. Kamino --- tons of water and more visual treats
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Petroglyph Chris: Question: I'm excited that Mandalorians get to be in EAW. Will they they be mercenaries hired by the Underworld? What about Boba Fett's relationship?
Answer: In Forces of Corruption the Mandalorians only supply Tyber with weapons.
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: What qualities/unique attributes in your game make it stand out from other RTS games? (Such as Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, Rome: Total War, etc.)
Answer: I think the main difference is the game modes. Not only do we have a land RTS aspect found in these other games, but it also has galactic and space - giving players complete control over an entire battle - not restrained to one particular area such as land.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Kalen: I know you probably didn't have anything to do with the voice actors in this, but did you hire new actors to play old character's voices or go with some of the original cast of the star wars movies?
Answer: Frank Klepacki did a ton of the work and then Lucas gets the talent to do the voice acting on certain ccharacters as well

Petroglyph Chris: Question: Daniiren: What Star Wars movie is your favorite?
Answer: I love EP 2, 3 and 5.

[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: orangeboy94: are you guys going to make Empire at War for other systems beside the PC?
Answer: We would love to. Naturally this depends upon LucasArts and their plans for these consoles, as well as demand.

Answer: We manage to get our hands on reference straight from Lucasfilm for many planet reference needs. It's always a pleasure to get solid info from the films themselves!
[Petroglyph] SAGEKING: Question: [Toast]sleepyperson2: does original have to be installed to play the expasion?
Answer: Yup thats correct
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Zekks: how much from the expanded universe would you think of adding to a sequel/add-on (from the books that is)

Answer: Yes...
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: chooie: Will R2-D2 be able to use his Jets and Oil Slick as a special ability?
Answer: I was thinkign about that the other day. Unfortunately he wont but its a cool idea
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: Quinn: What planet do you think has the craziest terrain? Or which planet do you like the best for the strategical advantage
Answer: For crazy terrain, I think Utapau or Honoghr would be the winners (giant sink holes or fighting amongst toxic Imperial wreckage). For strategic fun, I think my favorites would either be Honoghr or Bespin.
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Quinn: What planet do you think has the craziest terrain? Or which planet do you like the best for the strategical advantage.
Answer: Mandalore and Kamino would be my favorite. They are very unique and look awesome!
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: piperdude: If a stormtrooper is alone in the middle of a clearing, and he gets shot, does it make a sound?
Answer: Depends on his death... did it hurt? ;)
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Mr.Spykerc8: Have you got someone in the team to check the truth about characters and stuffs you introduice and allows us to play. I mean is there somebody that checks if you're not mistaking about SW history and mythologie?
Answer: Licensing is all over the lore and mythology of the universe so nothing will be put in the game without them closely looking at the final product
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Mr.Spykerc8: Have you got someone in the team to check the truth about characters and stuffs you introduice and allows us to play. I mean is there somebody that checks if you're not mistaking about SW history and mythologie?
Answer: Lucas goes over everything with a fine tooth comb. They rejected a few of our concepts and story ideas,That's why we work closely with them to bring out only the best ideas.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: =HT=Gamma [xfireplus.com]: Which vehicles are your favorites and why?
Answer: Empire --- Dark Trooper II -- doesnt cost a ton and can fly Rebels --- Yoda -- he's the jedi master!! Consortium --- Silri -- She is just a super fun unit with life stealing specials and a rancor to boot!!
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: yoda x: Do you play any other star wars games like SWG, SWKOTOR I & II, Jedi Outcast I & II, and Jedi Academy??

[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: GoldenEye`: Do you hate me? :[
Answer: Not at all ! :)
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: How do you come up with such cool ideas like the "Lightsaber Whip"?
Answer: I need to give myself credit on this one... I came up with it and hoped licensing would buy it. They did! I saw a force whip in a reference book and thought... hmmm.. whats even cooler than that? A lightsaber whip of course! I dont know how it works but maybe the guys at lucas can add this weapon to a later book with some inner-workings figured out. :)
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: How do you come up with such cool ideas like the "Lightsaber Whip"?
Answer: I think the inspiration for this largely came as a collaboration between Pat Pannullo, Chris Rubyor, and Adam Isgreen. When creating the concept for Silri, it just seemed like a really good fit for her as a character and it proved to be a cool opportunity to try something new within the universe.
Petroglyph Chris: She did indeed
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Eric / Phlakaton helped out a great deal with that as well, and is heavily immersed in Star Wars universe. Many of the designers deferred to him considering his love for the lore and the characters.
[Petroglyph] SAGEKING: Question: piperdude: Would the dev chat be interested in participating in a skirmish with the community, hosted by xfire?

[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: CommanderKoran: Is there any advice for a 9th Grader to get into a College that deals with Gaming?
Answer: Keep making fine art for now... getting all the basics of 2d and 3d design... there are some nice colleges for this field. Savannah College of Art & Design (my school) and Full Sail. Digipen? Not sure about some of the others. Get some 3d software like a student copy of Max and photoshop... go nuts and copy all the game art you love... match all the stuff you see

Answer: You're right... it's tough getting new SW units and characters into the already loaded universe but its always a blast to see something new get made. Urai Fen is a whole new species and we made him! A new faction contains so many new things and its a lot of work but licensing helps us out
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: RAF]Tootythebear: Is their any memorable events you would like to share with us when you guys were developing the game?
Answer: Me finally beating Adam "The Machine" Pitts in MP on a few occasions. He's the madman

Answer: I saw 10 chipmunks staring at my through Joe Bostic's window once..they were like all standing up just staring..I think they were watching us play video games..
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Kalen: Out of all other factions that could have been chosen in the Star Wars Universe, why did you choose to make an original faction?
Answer: It made sense for what we wanted to do and gave us more freedom.
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: toscana: What are the greatest risks and goals you have to address when developing a new faction and unique modules like vehicles when you are working within the, well, super-saturated universe of Star Wars and its well-versed fans?
Answer: Some of the biggest risks included the introduction of the third faction and it's units. Our art team lead by our own Eric Kearns did a tremendous job at creating a new faction that looked like it was firmly rooted within the universe. Finding the role and postion of the new faction was difficult, but we had a lot of help from LucasArts in this regard.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Kalen: Out of all other factions that could have been chosen in the Star Wars Universe, why did you choose to make an original faction?
Answer: Freedom to make new goodies. The Black Sun had been done many times and we wanted to make something original
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: =DE=-Piett: Have
you altered the A.I. at all or will it be the same as EaW's?
Answer: I cant speak for the galactic conquests as much but try a
skirmish on HARD. It will be pretty tough this time around
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: Kalen: You realize now that in creating a new faction you are going to see Fan fics about this new faction, right?
Answer: Sweet!
[Petroglyph] SAGEKING: Question: {666} |Lokonopa|: Last question FTW... Have any of you guys stayed up over 24 hours playing an online MMORPG.

[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: crafting something worthlesss
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: lmao
[Petroglyph] MFetterman: Question: Kalen: You realize now that in creating a new faction you are going to see Fan fics about this new faction, right?
Answer: We look forward to it. Working with the Star Wars license is great since it gives us (and fans of what we do) the ability to make their mark within a very popular and very well known world.
Petroglyph Chris: Question: Kalen: You realize now that in creating a new faction you are going to see Fan fics about this new faction, right?
Answer: I look forward to it.
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: =HT=Gamma [xfireplus.com]: Was one of the requirements of the job to develop Empire at War, to be a die hard Star Wars fan?
Answer: Thats why I got the job lol
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: maybe Sageking can post a pic of my office sometime
[Petroglyph] Phlakaton: Question: piperdude: Thank you dev team... ... ... give me the light saber (waves his hand). These arn't the droids your looking for.
