Incompaibility issues with XP 64-bit
2011-05-17 9:25 AM PDT
Ever since I switched over Windows XP Professional 64-bit OS, I've found more & more programs/hardware that is incompatible with it. It appears that since Windows XP 64-bit is considered as a server OS, companies just aren't willing to go out of their way to make compatible versions of their software/drivers for people who use it as a normal OS. Seeing as the list just seems to get larger & larger, I decided to start a list so people would be aware of what they're getting themselves into when upgrading to XP 64-bit & what hardware to avoid if they already have it:

PROGRAMS:DRIVERS:I will likely dual-boot off of my old Windows XP Home 32-bit so that I can still run programs & use my hardware not compatible with my 64-bit XP; I just need to get another hard drive before I attempt it.

Who would upgrade to XP these days? I would assume everyone's main upgrade choice is now Windows 7. Get with the times, man!

Edit: Windows 7 Ultimate supports 16-bit apps.

64-bit doesn't. I know this because my father can no longer run his old accounting programs for his CPA-firm on it. I spent some time trying to get them to work in DOSBox, but turned out to be a lost cause.

My HP Camera would cause shutdown issues (aka, Windows would never shutdown). Drivers or no drivers. I had to disable the camera from bios to fix taht problem.

I think another problem was, that Minecraft had graphics corruption, but that might be because of AMD's OGL support for XP x64.

As for XP x64 itself, I might consider using it, if it had EFI booting abilities (I hear only the IA copy of XP x64 has it though, and I have AMD64). But Win7 works too I guess.

Well my only purpose of getting a 64-bit system was to bypass the 4 GB RAM limitation of 32-bit systems, although I'm regretting my decision now.

I heard from somewhere that 32-bit OS's can have access to more then 4GB of memory, but it's with a 3rd party modification.

But this modification came from the 32-bit Server 2008, which by default (if I heard right) can use up to 64GB of system RAM.

I'd rather just use a x64 OS though, but that above modification might be helpful to those without x64 CPU's or drivers

Why not just upgrade to 7? It's not like Vista.

I'm going to have to get that site from you when you find it again espionage724. I looked for a workaround to the RAM limitation before I bought the new OS, but I didn't find anything.
