Mass Effects new DLC…. Meh!
2009-08-27 8:38 PM PDT
Right so lets start out with the facts.

1. for those with the plat hit version your going to shell out an additional 400 points
2. costs 400 points (5 USD)
3. provides about 2-4 hours additional content

If you happen to have gotten the plat hits version (like me) let me explain point one. There appears to be a coding difference between the first DLC (bringing down the sky) from the bonus CD and the downloadable version on XBL that makes the new DLC freak out and not load into the game. In short, you have to delete the DLC that came with the game, download the one from XBL and then the new DLC will display. In short if you really want to use this new DLC it will cost you a total of 800 points and in my opinion the DLC is just not worth that expense.

In this DLC is basically a two room station, a “virtual reality generator” (in actuality the room is loaded along with the loading screen so no cool “the matrix is loading around you” effect) that gives you access to five combat areas. Three achivements and a apartment that you can win that you will only visit once.

Okay so there are four types of missions you can run. Hunt, Capture, Survive and Time.

Hunt: Kill as many enemies in x amount of time. Each kill gives you a few extra seconds but don’t let that fool you, the way the enemies spawn will see too it that eventually you will run out of time.

Capture: If the name doesn’t clue you in its in essence capture the flag. You run to a spot, stand in it for a few seconds while taking fire and repeat about three or four more times.

Survive: Similar to hunt but only in reverse. Wave after wave of increasingly difficult enemies come out of no where to kill you. Eventually the game starts spawning the hardest enemies the game has in an huge waves. The kicker though is that some areas of the offered maps have natural bottlenecks so you and your team can hold off the horde indefinitely. My personal best is well over five minutes until I got bored, then I found out that I just needed to hold the...

Top 10 things video gamers should avoid
2009-08-10 10:38 AM PDT
In my experience, there are 10 things things in the video gamer subculture that its denizens should avoid at all costs. These in my opinion cover the entire sub culture.

10. Being suckered in by a CG video- developers these days employ CG movies that look nothing like what the game will actually be like when played. I don’t detract that these are pretty or may help to provide some information about what to expect but lets be honest here, basing your choice to buy a video game on a CG movie is stupid.

9. Paying for strategy guides- I’m sure we’ve all done it, bought a strategy guide that we thought we needed at the time because it has that awesome color map, or the secret potion recipe of immortality but all this information is often times the experiences of an individual paid to do this sort of thing. Why pay for this information when you can go to a gamer website and get it for free, and usually in more detail?

8. Video game Merchandise- Some merchandise is okay, like a keychain or clothing with your favorite video game faction emblem. Others, like a 8.5 inch figure of a main character of your favorite videogame is not. Why may you ask? Ask yourself will you be embarrassed to explain to your friends, family or girlfriend why you have a scantly clad 18 year old female doll standing on your console (or computer) winking at you. In the girlfriends case, ask yourself if it will end your relationship or not.

7. “Pretty cover” purchase- another thing we are all guilty of doing at one point or another, buying a video game simply because the box cover caught our eye. It’s a known marketing technique, you make the cover flashy enough to catch someone’s eye and bank on the possibility that the person will buy it on impulse. If the game is worth it you can come back to the store to buy it after doing the research. With games typically costing 60 dollars before tax and the economy in the toilet as it is today impulse buying of a video game you may not like is a bad move no matter how you look at it.
