Addendum on King's Bounty: The Legend
2009-01-29 1:24 PM PST
If you do not want to read spoilers, I suggest not to continue reading this one.

Further into the game, it shows more surprises. If you are somewhat known with Lord of the Rings Online, and its Legendary Weapons, the King's Bounty has something that is somewhat similar in idea.

You'll at some point acquire a box, the Rage Box, it will be in the main quest so you will not be able to avoid it. That box will somehow be 'attached' to your soul. In other words: You are its master.

The box contains four creatures, 'Rage Spirits'. Each of them has its unique strength. Two of those you will likely be able to use soon with reasonable ease. Those spirits want to be convinced why the hell they should serve you. The other two, you will have to be a bit further into the game to be able to convince them as they require certain items that won't be available that early yet.

When you go into the battlefield, you will have mana naturally to fight the enemy with your spells. Next to mana, though, you will have rage. With this Rage Box, it is when the rage will become useful. Instead of using mana, you use rage to call on the abilities of those Rage Spirits in the battlefield. Just like the spellbook, you will be able to use them once every combat turn. (Though you can upgrade the spellbook later via skills)

So, that concept was pretty neat. Especially as you can talk with those spirits and figure out where they are from, how they got in that box, etc. Some are quite sympathetic. They can be leveled up and more and more abilities will be available. It looks like your own levelup popup window, you can choose one out of 2 abilities to add to your spirit which just leveled up.

Unlike Age of Wonders, this is one giant storyline. It is a RPG where you can advance almost solely by a lot of combat. So, you will have to go into the hexagonally tiled battlefield more than a gajillion times.

Those side quests are not necessary to advance in story, except that you likely will have to do them in order to gain enough...

King's Bounty: The Legend

This very much resembles Heroes of Might & Magic, or Age of Wonders, turn-based. Except that it is completely updated for 2008/2009 regarding graphics quality.

You get a large game world to walk around in with your hero. Your hero should have some army accompanying him. You'll have the space for 5 different units. The hero can improve his abilities with wearing certain items. The size of his units is determined by his Leadership ability. The bigger his ability, the more units he can have.

Battlefield scenes are divided into hexagonal tiles. If you know Master of Magic, the battle's like that, except for the shape of the tiles. The hero (you) can cast spells and is not visible on the game grid itself. All your units will be shown on the grid and they can each move a certain amount and attack and stuff. Or even use their magic if they happen to have magic abilities.

It's a fun game overall, and graphics-wise they are very pretty. When Age of Wonders came out, it was regarded as a very pretty graphical update on the other games of this genre. You could say that this game, the King's Bounty: The Legend is the same way of this day and age, a very pretty upgrade.

Typical Korean MMO. Hack'n'slash. I'd think ROSE Online is a lot more fun compared to PWI. Controls are quirky. Graphics is mwach.

Big letdown. It's basically a gigantic game consisting of a bunch of minigames with your own created creatures. In some minigames you can't even edit your creature (tribal stage, e.g.) Most of the minigames are fairly boring.

Is this the future of gaming? I'd rather shoot myself in my foot!

Wow, this game's actually kind of FUN! It highly reminds me of Mario Karts but a PC-alternative for it.

It's really mostly a light and fun game. You join in some random game, it has various modes possible. So far I've seen free for all and team mode. In team mode, the trick is to NOT hit your team mates with your weapons. That proves to be harder than it looks!

There really are a nice variety of maps available. I've seen so far: Arctic, Halloween, jungle, race track, and there probably are a bunch more type maps. Some are real tricky. The arctic maps, for example, could have a bit a slippery road so that corners will be a bit harder. Others have poles right in the middle of the tracks (to divide the road in two), the trick is to NOT hit those poles! Some have bridges that are a bit narrow, so, aim well!

You can upgrade your looks, apparently. I'm not sure if you can earn the money for that in-game, or that you have to pay real money for any changes. I'll have to figure out that one, but I'm not likely to pay real money for it. If I can pay for it with in-game money, I'll probably go for it.

You can make buddies there. Chatting is kind of amusing. Some people have a bit a short fuse but you're best off just to ignore them. The main reason one would want to play this game is a bit of fun insane racing where you can bombard, throw banana peels, boost, etc. If you're playing this hardcore then there is something really wrong with you.

The interface, before you start any game, leaves a slight bit to be desired. If you get used to it, it ought to be easy. But it wasn't 100% intuitive in the beginning. Tip: Check that 'back button' next to the 'garage button'. That usually brings you back to the main menu of sorts.

But, basically, this is a Mario Karts clone, for the PC. And I have to say, they've done it pretty nicely!

When this game's description read 'Economy' and putting a lot of emphasis on that, I kind of had high expectations about its economical system.

I'm sad to say that I was disappointed when I tried out this game. I found the movement a bit clumsy. But then, moving around by clicking on the floor with the mouse never really has been my favourite. The pathfinding also kind of sucked, if there was just one object in the way (even a small one like a raised piece of a walkway), your character stops running and you have to manually steer around it. Very clumsy, really. I'd have expected some basic pathfinding algorithms at work there. But then, I guess that's why this game is free.

About economy.. Well. What I've noticed is that there are player stalls littered around the marketplaza. It kind of reminds me of ROSE Online, which I tried during its beta period. The trouble with that approach is that soon enough there'll be lots and lots of players doing that and the place would be littered with all those individual merchants. I'd rather have some centralized kind of economy, with some auctions or specific 'store places', et cetera. The prices were highly unrealistic, too. 'Broken Wood' was 500 gold. I don't know exactly, but I'm sure that even in the time of the Roman Empire, that 500 gold was a huge fortune. You could say 'but the players make that kind of inflation!', maybe... but those were NPC merchants which already offer those unrealistic prices.

Combat is a bit clumsy from what I've tried. You'd got to doubleclick on an enemy and you'd automatically engage it. But the doubleclicking part sometimes is quite tricky when the enemy's moving fast, then you click wrong and you walk there instead of engaging. And looting is not very easy to do, either. You really ought to click exactly on the loot to get it. Sure, you could press 'G' to pick up loot, but that only works when you're pretty close to it.

The graphics in itself are pretty nice enough, but unfortunately you can't do altogether too much. I mean, the...

Oh man, tried it. Way too PVP-ish. You really got to have a good connection and fast reflexes.

You're supposed to join in a 'team' with others, and just work together to kill the boss of the other team, apparently. I didn't really see anything else besides that. The tutorial gave me a completely different impression, as if there were quests/missions possible or whatnot.

I've decided that this free MMO isn't really it for me. Too hack'n'slash-ish. The idea is kinda nice, though. You could try to dodge and stuff. But seeing as I'm not too fast in my reflexes...
