COD4 is coming, and we'll be playing it
2008-01-02 11:47 AM PST
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is about to be released, and as you may know we will have a Call of Duty 2-event, this tuesday, the 13th.
Naturally, we couldn't resist the temptation to be able to offer you COD4 as well, so if you have had time to get your hands on the game you will be able to play it during the evening, with TEK9.
Will you be able to beat them in their "own" game? It might be now or never. Hurry up before they get too big of a head start.
I think I'll actually run off and get the game myself and practice all weekend. If you can't beat them, perhaps you can beat me? Not likely, but who knows...
Here's a recent (clickable) picture of me, think what you want of it. Do leave a comment if I scare you.
[The picture is a screenshot from a short film, a splatter movie that I'm in. The blood is not real, and I'm holding a saw. The helmet is authentic though.]

First Esportszone event. Finally!
2008-01-02 11:39 AM PST
Yeah, you've probably read the newspost, and here you are. We've finally announced the first event in Xfire EsportsZone. We will have GotFrag conducting an interview with one of the best COD teams in the world, TEK9. We're talking about some really hardcore gamers and GotFrag is one of the best sites out there, they have some really good people writing and we will have one of them, Liam Crowley, here. Asking questions. He will get us all the info we could possibly want from TEK9 during 30 very intense minutes.
I'm really excited about getting to know a bit more about who the guys in TEK9 are, as well as what they do. And the good thing about this is that we actually can guarantee interesting questions. So, not just the "what kit is your favourite one"-type of questions, because really. They have probably been asked those questions dozens of times before.
Well, what can I say. I'm really excited about this. And naturally, I will be at working the event, so in case you feel like expressing some of your thoughts on this, you can talk to me. I hope a lot of you show up to make this launch a truly wonderful one. We offer you all we've got, now the rest is all up to you. Take this chance and show up for a night to remember. I know I will be enjoying every second of it. And after this one we have some equally cool events coming up, but I'm afraid I'll get scolded if I give away any info about those. What I can say is that you won't get disappointed.
This will be one winter to remember. I need to go get some warm clothes, hot chocolate with whipped cream and a comfortable pillow to sit on. I'll be benched in front of Xfire for the months to come.

The money in gaming
2008-01-02 11:33 AM PST
In my previous entry I started talking a bit about the money involved in gaming, and I thought I'd express some more of my thoughts on that subject. And also, a bit about how sponsoring works.
Professional gaming is about money, and it's not something anyone can deny. For some gamers, this means that they have to leave behind just playing for fun, and actually focus on becoming really good. It may sound like a small task, but with the way competitions work there isn't that big of a difference between the best player and one that is only mediocre. Getting sponsorship isn't easy, and when money is involved there is a lot of people that need to benefit from a deal. It's usually easier to get products, such as mice, mousepads or headsets, than to get real money. A company pays only a very small part of the final retail price in actual manufacturing costs, so from their view, it's a cheap way of getting exposure.
And, apart from the big companies contributing with money to the teams there are also big organisations that hold competitions, we covered ESWC earlier this year, which although it doesn't offer the most money, is very well respected. A team winning the ESWC and getting crowned the champions of the world is bound to have an easier time with sponsors. And of course, the prize money doesn't exactly hurt either.
However, apart from having to qualify, the travel and hotel stay costs a lot of money. This is the reason why you don't usually see teams that are unknown online make it to the biggest competitions. There were some teams that qualified for ESWC that couldn't show up, due to the costs involved. For five players and one manager we are talking thousands of euros. To be able to cover this you have to have big sponsorship, or get the players to pay the travel themselves, and that's no easy task.
Anyways, I guess that what I am trying to say is the following:
Don't expect to get paid to game, because that way you won't get disappointed. To be able to pay you a decent wage a company needs to get a...

C&C3 Xfire Trophy aired on Game One!!
2008-01-02 11:28 AM PST
Friday at 8:30, on Game One, meet the strategy masters who battle for the 5th Xfire Trophy.
The first semi-final game witnesses the frenchman knolz clash against Dackel, from Germany, who ranked third in the latest edition of the World Cyber Games.
As usual, the game will be available to international audience on Game One's website by next monday.
Command & Conquer fans, do not miss this opportunity to watch two of the best players in the World fight for the prize. Next week, Apollo, winner of the WCG, meets Metalon in the other semi-final game.
Here's a link to the C&C3 Xfire Trophy minisite where you can gather more informations about the players and read the transcript of the chat they all attended on September the 26th on Xfire.
Though our Trophy has nothing to be jealous of in terms of competition, we still need a sexy mascot... We'll borrow WCG's this time.

A clash of champions
2008-01-02 11:25 AM PST
The Xfire Trophy looks more and more like a world class event these days...
To buckle up this new Xfire Trophy, we had emuLate join us as a last minute guest, straight from their victory at WCG.
After we've had the winner and bronze medalist of the C&C3 event attend our last edition, we'll see if the surprise winner of the Counter-Strike tournament can hold on to great expectations.
Of course, aAa and mushkin, who've had many opportunities to face emuLate in national competitions may find it quite stimulating to knock a fellow french team off its brand new throne.
And emuLate has a personal problem to settle here with Team aAa... Before they claimed World supremacy in Seattle, they still couldn't dispatch their fellows two months ago as they were unable to snatch the Xfire Trophy from aAa's hands in a breathtaking final game.
But do not count out hoorai, from Germany, who should be eager to perform in a hostile french speaking field.
Not as hostile but as french speaking, our mini-site will guide you if you want to join the events related to the Xfire Trophy competition.

From the Xfire Trophy to the World Cyber...
2008-01-02 11:17 AM PST
As we celebrate the return of Counter-Strike in the Xfire Trophy competition next month, Apollo, the C&C3 Master, who attended the last edition, battled through and won the WCG this week-end ! The british young gun whose semi-final match versus Metalon will be aired on Game One on the 26th of october took home 12.000 $! To help you salivate, Dackel (who finished 3rd at this year's WCG) and Knolz will entertain us on the 19th in the other semi-final broadcast.
Those incoming Counter-Strike teams will have to prove pretty spectacular to compete... They'll be introduced to you very soon, but we can only hope for the same intense competition that aAa and emulate gave us last week.
To end today's entry, don't forget about the PES6 exhibition game between Smaingerrard and Nonomel. Friday at 8:30 on Game One.
