Self confirmation.
2008-04-26 05:02 PDT
Gamers really like being first and getting self confirmation. Why is that?

Well. I start off with a bit of a generalization, but I believe that it is true for quite a few of us gamers out there. It sure was (and is?) for me. I play games because I enjoy it, but to tell the truth, nothing beats being acknowledged as someone who stands out.

I have mainly been an FPS-gamer, and through that I was able to win quite a few big tournaments and important games.
And it feels darn good to hear someone say your nickname, interview you or comment on your performance (if it was good, that is).

A typical gamer, or is it?

But why is it that me and quite a few others choose to get our acknowledgment through gaming?
I think it's mostly about the fact that it is relatively easy to become a good gamer. Don't get me wrong, but it doesn't take quite as long as becoming a new Ronaldinho, Wayne Gretzky or whatever other sports star you like.

At the same time, thanks to it being pretty easy to become good, the stardom quickly fades. If you leave gaming you are pretty quickly forgotten. I am really happy that I played computer games for a big part of my life and managed to become quite good at it, and it was surely one of the best parts of my life so far. It made me miss out on quite a lot in school and could potentially have wrecked my future, but I was lucky and it turned out OK in the end.

I don't want to get any of you to stop playing games, and I don't want to lecture anyone with this post. I felt like rambling a bit about one of the occurrences I have seen. I hope that everyone has their own goals and do what they think is best.

What do you think?

well i feel the same way gamers just get caught up in a game or they say "this inst in public so ill make fun of this guy" is the same way with little kids playing online games. "ha ha ha my mommy could beat u!" (although kids are just annoying)

I agree with your post... I spent 5 years of my life gaming on computers in clans/teams. I still do game quite a bit but i now have a social life also lol. i stopped gaming for a little and started going out more with friends and got a job.

Although i still game and love to game, i will never let it bring me back to the kid that sits in his basement all day gaming.

As for all you kids there that still have a chance to get out and start a social life, i say, do it, dont waist all your time inside trying to be the best gamer in your clan/team, its just a waist in the end.

Very true about the stardom fading. People quickly find ways of making your success invalid (ex. saying the game sucks, that you spend too much time playing, ect.) and quite frankly no one cares about anyones performance but their own. Other people in online games simply serve as a comparison to your skill; when was the last time you followed around the guy that pulled a head shot off on you and asked for his personal info, what his occupation is, how he got so good, and if he wants to be your mentor? Rather than this, you simply hunt him down in the game to prove to yourself that you're ebtter than him.
