The Carrot.

Secret ingredient into all MMORPG games.
It is the one thing that keeps the monthly fee rolling in.
UO, and everquest did this to perfection. Star Wars Galaxies failed miserably on this because, they had forgotten to add end game content to keep their players, ie. their carrot got stale, and players went back to DAOC or Evercrack.
This lead to the downfall of an early rising game, which would soon come to be a personal favorite of all those who stuck around, or came back because of the amazing star wars world, and a pvp system unmatched by any game to date.
Now, why am I talking about this? Well its because World of Warcraft has done this to absolute complete and uter PERFECTION.
Ive played the game before, ive seen all the content I am currently playing, yet I still play!?

But in reality, World of Warcraft is already working overtime on updating my carrot, once i hit 40. It will be either in the form of a 60 epic mount, a new skill, entrance to the outlands (new content thats pure golden carrot for me) or to the drawing ever closer level 70.
But one would say, ohh theres your end theres your relief, level 70 is the end you can get bored then, relax do other things, no need.
Yea tell that to the millions of people grinding 6-8 hours a night at level 70.
How can they grind if they are at the level cap?
Ohh see this is where the genious of World of Warcraft comes in. You don't get levels, you instead get gear and goodies (which will become useless after an expansion, update, or nerf). Thes will help count as levels against your opponents whether in the pve realm or pvp realm, either way you can still be higher level than your buddies or enemies, which of course is the goal is it not? To PWN!
It is...
