My F.E.A.R. 2 (demo) opinion
2009-01-26 6:05 AM PST
Hi all,

Well, I've just tried F.E.A.R. 2 and these are my thoughts about it. I did it a bit late, but I expected the solo to be different from the multi (I thought there'd be a multi demo, actually, I didn't pay attention to the announces around the demo release, february 13 is the date which matters most to me)

The main thing that stroke me is : no more holster, hyperpunch, and the run depending on your stamina gauge make me feel the game is slower than the first. The run looks weird also, as if you were doing little steps. With the feeling that the run isn't as fast as before, the overall feeling is that everything is slow when it comes to movement.

The 2 new weapons in the demo (shaft and sniper) are really good ideas, even though I wonder how it is going to be used in the multiplayer part of the game. The F.E.A.R. 2 shaft, contrary to many other games, doesn't seem to have a lenght limit, that is to say if a sniper shoots at you, you can use the shaft to kill him, no matter how far he is from you (kind of weird). The shaft has a loading period before you can shoot, which can be balanced with high damage, or great aiming. Also, the sniper is a "1-shot-1-kill" weapon, even when you shoot in feet. Will the shaft give some kind of motion penalty ? Will the sniper rifle have this kind of laser thing while in use ? Would be cool to spot snipers, but I wonder how it is going to be when it comes to high skilled matches: the players will probably headshot/grenade/ua you before you can have the opportunity to shoot.

The unarmed is still here, and for those who were using the hyperpunch (so you don't have to make efforts to get how to use it) well sorry, but it seems that you (im among those =) ) will have to learn how to use it, and buy a big mousepad so you can do that darn thing, the 720-degrees-rotation-with-the-mouse-and-closed-eyes, that will give you a chance to kill the guy(s) even if you're not able to aim properly. I expect you guys to get unscopped when doing unarmed too close from a sniper.

I also wonder about the number of weapons you can carry. It used to be 2, now it is 4, with 2 kinds of grenades. I think it is a lot, 2 weapons were enough. The flame grenade is also something that will change the way we used to play, even if this change will rely on the damage, and the duration of the fire damage. If you survive the grenade blow, not sure you'll survive the fire, and if you're too close from a burning player, will you burn as well ?

I won't spend much time on video effects, textures, etc... because im not playing with AA16x, full effects, particules, etc...
Yet the 2 black stripe are bothering me a lot. It changes with the resolution you use, and it is at 1680*1050 that they're the thinnest.

The overall feeling about this demo (meaning this is not the final game yet, even if I doubt, according to the release dates, there will be major change(s) in the final game)is that the game is slower (even if it is not a real problem, game speeds can, and probably will, be modified on game servers)and yet I expect fights to be tough (and messy) because everything depends more and more on weapons, less on bugs (leaning/glitching and hyperpunch) and that slowing down the game will prevent you from getting from A to B through an empty area with taking barely no damage.

I can't think of anything else for now, I'll add it if I think about it
