Is there a link between Acne and Depression?
For many people suffering with Acne it can have a major effect on their confidence leading to possible depression. Although acne can affect people of all ages it is mainly teenagers who are effected. At this stage in their life a lot of changes are going on in their body so it can be quite a daunting time anyway, add to this the fact they are most likely to be at school where as I’m sure a lot of people will agree, younger people can be a lot less tactful when it comes to commenting on people’s appearance so with all these things added together it is not surprising that people suffering with acne can be depressed.
It is a bit of a catch 22 situation because one of the main remedies for acne is a product called Roaccutane which although has shown very positive results in treating acne, one of the side effects with it can be depression.
With the above in mind what can somebody do to treat acne?
Cutting the junk food out as much as possible is one thing that has been shown to help. By swapping junk food for more healthy foods such as fibrous vegetables, cereals and nuts our bodies will be healthier in general giving them a better chance to fight the acne.
Regular washing of the face is important using a specialised face wash for acne treatment. It is a bit of a minefield when looking for a face wash as there are so many out there claiming so many things. My recommendation would be to read up on the reviews and see which one seems the most popular What you also have to remember is what works for one person doesn’t work for another so if you find after a few weeks there is no improvement, try not to be to dis heartened and try a different one.
To topically treat the acne, try to use a diluted tea tree oil solution which has anti-bacterial properties and many people have had success with it. Other oils such as lavender have also been known to improve problem skin.
I suffered from acne when I was at school so I know how it can feel. The feelings of resentment towards people who had nice clear skin and the thoughts of would my skin ever clear up. Fortunately after a few years my skin did clear up and for the majority of people this will be the case. For people that don’t suffer from acne I think they find it hard to understand how depressing it can actually be.
I’d like to be writing this article and have it contain the perfect cure but unfortunately I don’t think there is one. My main advice is to follow the tips above, stay healthy and make sure you concentrate on making sure everything else with your appearance is as nice as it can be. For example your clothes, keep in good shape at the gym etc and just try not to let the acne get you down because it is most likely only a temporary thing.
