Cochlear implant
2009-03-15 7:12 AM PDT
Been reading a lot about it lately... As you know I am deaf and cochlear implants would probably let me hear, at least a little bit, once again. I mean, of course I wouldn't regain all my hearing, but at least I'd be able to recognize basic sounds, such as phone ringing etc... And very probably even words and whole sentences, at least in "1 on 1" conversation in a quiet environment.

Sounds wonderful right? But... The implantation process results in damage to nerve cells within the cochlea and not just them... There's also higher risk of getting an infection. I'd also have to behave more carefully, I shouldn't dive, rehabilitation process is kinda painful, long and requires much effort etc...

Anyways, even if I applied for a cochlear implant, I wouldn't automatically get it. I'd be put on a candidacy list and then eventually be selected or not...

Shall I apply or not? >.>

My už jsme se o tom spolu bavili, že? Můj názor znáš , já bych do toho šla. Věřím, že ti to hodně pomůže. A problémy s tím spojené? Ty se dají překonat, zvlášť v dnešní době . Nežijeme ve středověku, ne?

You know, I wish I was deaf. And if I were, I'd want to stay deaf. But, if it's your dream to hear the world when it's falling apart, even if only faintly, then let nothing stop you.
