COMMAND & CONQUER 3 CHAT ON XFIRE WITH METALON, KNOLZ, APOLLO AND DACKEL
September 26th, Online.

Before stepping on stage to try and grab the 5th Xfire Trophy, our four contestants took part in a live chat with Xfire users. All very relaxed and open, the masters of strategy share their views on C&C, RTS and pro-gaming. And we'll even get a hint of what prospects a young C&C champion might head for, both in gaming and "real life". Meet in close details Metalon, Knolz, dignitas/Apollo and a-L|Dackel.

Maybe a bit of a broad question, any general tips?
dignitasapollo: My general tips would be practice, it’s the most basic way that everyone tells you, but it is so true. Practice makes perfect, you become more confident in your playing style and will overtime become more experienced and turn into a much better player.
Metalon: Watch a lot of replays from good players, and just basically play a lot. Experiment with units and build orders etc.

What is the most essential element in successfully defeating the enemy?
knolz: The build order is very important in CC3. If you miss your build order, you can lose! But micro takes a good part of the game too. So for me, the most essential element is the build order.

radu12345: What is your most preferred defence/attack unit? What is your most preferred race?
dignitasapollo: My favourite faction is Scrin, it always has been since the release of the game, Scrin looks so cool! Its great to play with as well, especially when you get late game and have access to their superior units. Tripods ftw!
dackelcc: My most preferred race is GDI. In the early game, I like to use APCs combined with engineers. In the later game, I use Mammoths and Firehawks. For defence I use, Sonic Emitters.
dackelcc: GDI: Sonic Emitters, Firehawks, APCs combined with engineers.

What playing styles have you guys adopted?
dignitasapollo: I like to be aggressive when possible, but on the other hands its always nice to sit around and get some of the Scrin late game units up which basically own everything :D
radu12345: This may seem like an unrequited question, but how exactly did you start out playing C&C 3?

Did you start out with doing the tutorial, playing a scenario or...?
knolz: I started CC3 with playing online, in multiplayer. I think that's the best way to improve your skill. But each time you lose, you must watch the replay and understand why you lost!
dackelcc: I just started out with the multiplayer modus. It's best if you play the best from the start...
dignitasapollo: Good question, I started out playing a 2v2 clan war as my first game ever on cnc3, we lost and I was like wtf are all these units and buildings :D I generally like to jump in the deep end and go straight online and mess around testing units and strats; it’s always the best way to start a new game.
Metalon: Well I played a lot of C&C games before so it didn’t take me long to get into the game. I played the demo a lot when it came out and started right on multiplayer when I got the game.

Colonel Tempest: do you feel that C&C allows for as much tactical variation as you’d like?
dackelcc: Definitely not. C&C3 Tiberium Wars is a very superficial game. There is hardly any variety.
radu12345: What do you like doing first? Preparing defense units and buildings, charging and attacking the enemies or balancing both?
knolz: It depends on the match up and the map, but I often build buildings first (of course) and units to defend me. If I have not enough units, I build defense towers.
Metalon: To be honest, I don’t. The main problem in my opinion is there’s way too little variety in the maps. I'd like bigger maps with bigger opportunities for flanking etc.

Pazy: Did you start playing on Dune 2, original C&C or are new strategy games?
dignitasapollo: I started playing red alert on the Playstation, I used to love playing that, was my first taste of an RTS game, I played it with my brothers, I later played generals:Zero Hour as my first RTS game online.

radu12345: Did you have any problems with the game, not meeting the system requirements or such?
dignitasapollo: I have vista, it causes some problems sometimes, randomly closing my cnc3 down :P

Pazy: Was your original intention when buying C&C 3 to become a 'master' at it?
knolz: My intention was to participate to World Cyber Games on it. Then when I saw that I’m not so bad at this game, I thought it could be cool to do other events and other lans.
dignitasapollo: Yea, I bought the game to be the best on it, I wanted to become the best player at win many tournaments, I have done well so far and hope to continue this into next week when I fly out to America for the World Cyber Games, where I will be representing the UK

Colonel Tempest: do you think that you would be able to direct the dev team on improving any sequels?
knolz: I don't think I would be able to direct the dev team, but any sequels could be avoided if EA ask some good players to know what is wrong in the game.

radu12345: Do you think you have met your highest abilities, or do you think there is more room for improvement?
dignitasapollo: There is always room for improvement, I am close to my height, but like I said, there is always room for improvement.

`H$`Thibi: You guys prefer playing CC on PC or on console?
dignitasapollo: PC all the way
Metalon: I've played the game a bit on console, and I also played one of the first c&c games on playstation1, and it's way easier to play on pc. You just can’t get as many hotkeys on a tiny control as on a big keyboard which I think is the main problem. I also think it's easier to look around with a mouse then a consol joystick.
dackelcc: Same as dignitasapollo’s answer, PC.

radu12345: Do you sometimes feel the game is boring when playing it? And, if so, when?
dignitasapollo: When training going over the same map for a long time gets boring and also losing to the same overpowered strat :P I always like to change things around like the maps or the matchups to keep me from boredom.

Colonel Tempest: how do you stop the game from becoming boring?
dackelcc: Playing other games in compensation or just not playing PC for a while.

Pazy: Before C&C3 were you big RTS fans are were you average or above average at previous RTS's?
Metalon: I've been a huge fan since Red alert 2, but never really been above average before now.
knolz: Well i played Counter-Strike for a long time, then WC3 during 2 years. I was not so bad at WC3 but i was not a pro !
dignitasapollo: I played many RTS games before I moved into cnc3, I played bfme12. coh, supreme commander, eaw, I was above average when I played them but I was considered the best GLA player on Generals:ZeroHour when i played that activity.

radu12345: Do you like the sounds implemented currently in the game? Would you suggest to the developer team any other sounds they should implement in?
dackelcc: I really like the sounds the units are making, although, I have turned off the music, as it's just annoying. I think the sound is ok as it's right now.
dignitasapollo: They are good but no where near as good without Frank Klepachi, he made the previous cnc games what they were.

radu12345: Were you addicted to the game from the start, if you were at all?
dignitasapollo: Never addicted, just like to play
knolz: The competition addict me, not really the game ! So i just like to play for competition, not really because the game is a really good game.

radu12345: Are there games better than C&C 3 out there that you have played, and which if so?
dignitasapollo: WIC! World in Conflict is awesome when you play with mates
dackelcc: CCG Zero Hour
Metalon: If you’re looking for a nice and strategic RTS game I would really recommend u to try Company of heroes. Entertaining single player and great multiplayer.

Do any of the top players play the alien bugs?
dackelcc: Alien bugs?

Colonel Tempest: what’s your worst ever loss and best win?
dignitasapollo: My biggest win so far was winning the world cyber games national UK finals last month which took me into the world finals in Seattle
dackelcc: My biggest wins so far was winning the German championship in Zero Hour, as well as the WCG qualification for Seattle.
knolz: My worst was against Leo in WCG France pre-qualifiers. It was on USA, I won but he takes my main with an engineer, then do a spam infantry, then I lost. If we regame now with the same condition, I will never lose!
knolz: It's also against bapor in WCG France semi final, he dropped engineer and take the win with a score of 2-1..

J3envolio: Do you agree that the music in C&CRA2 was awesome?
dignitasapollo: Yes! Hellmarch ftw!
Metalon: Best EVER!

radu12345: Do you have some friends to play the game with, or do you prefer single-player?
Metalon: I play online with friends all the time. To be honest I’ve almost not even tried the single player. :P
knolz: I really prefer to play with some friends. I can train more and more with friends, it's too boring to play alone.

radu12345: How did you build up your careers to become C&C 3 "masters"?
dignitasapollo: Play from day1, practice from day1 and then getting noticed for your skills and tournament wins

Colonel Tempest: who’s your biggest rival?
dackelcc: dignitasapollo

Pazy: Did any of you ever play C&C Renagade? and if so are you excited for the new C&C FPS?
Metalon: Yeah I played it a lot actually and I’m very interested in how the new C&C FPS game going to be like.
