PES6 CHAT ON XFIRE WITH SMAINGERRARD AND NONOMEL
July 25th 2007, Online

It's almost time for PES6 to pack and make room for its successor. But just before that, while the season drifts slowly towards its end, Smaïn "SmainGerrard" Ouadah, finalist of the 2007 french nationals and quarter-finalist at the World Cup and Arnaud "nonomel" Patient, spiritual leader of team aAa share their experience of the game and hopes and expectations for PES2008.

cia-clan.be » OTTr: Is there anything to earn in the pes competition (what sort of prizes are there)
nonomel: Usually mostly consoles but it can go up to 10 0000 dollars
nonomel: 10 000 !
nonomel: not 100000

cia-clan.be » OTTr: Are there any PES 6 PC tournaments out there, and how do they play lans on PC (there is no lan option in pes)
nonomel :
There are both, for pc tournaments, both players play with the same computer.

Wraith: what would you recommend to someone who wants to train to become a pro gamer?
nonomel: First, you need to be mad about it... Then you need to play with your brains and face opponents stronger than yourself

ti3um: Have you been following or did you attend the ESWC 2007 ? What's your opinion on the German World Champion, S-Butcher ?
smaingerrard: I attended the WOrld Cup, and I think Butcher is a very strong player who abuses Zlatan particularly well.
nomomel: I followed the World Cup and Butcher is very very good. Spank could have won it but as usu_al in PES, it was very close. But he deserved it.

cia-clan.be » OTTr: Dont you think support of LAN play would greatly improve "lannability",like fifa
nonomel: Since we can play both on the same cpu, it's not necessary.

Wraith: Do you think that tournaments improve the lifespan of games, or do they have no effect?
smaingerrard: For sure. Without tournaments, the game is not the same at all.

What do you think of PES6, compared to the other versions of the game ?
nonomel: PES6 has been criticized by a lot of players, too many bugs, much too arcade-oriented, good defense is impossible, I hope PES2008 (pes7) is muche more realistic.
smaingerrard: PES is really bugged, Inter especially with Adriano and Zlatan Ibrahimovic who are the best two players in the game. They can counter anything, it's almost impossible to face them. I hope n°7 will turn out to be more like the 5th edition, more realistic, like a real football simulation should be.

Botch: Is a very strong player like Ibrahimovic a problem for the game balance ?
nomomel: It's clearly unbalanced. We've heard it all year long in tournaments arenas
smaingerrard: It's ok for me since I play with Inter. But when I have to face Inter, he's always really problematic.

do you believe that soccer games will become a stronger force in the competitive video game leagues or do you believe that competititve video games will mainly remain the realm of first person shooters?
smaingerrard: Counterstrike is far ahead but year by year, I hope and expect PES to get bigger
nomomel: I don't think so because there are not enough online PES players

ti3um: When and how did you start playing PES ?
smaingerrard: Since Supernintendo's version.
nonomel: I started playing pes with the first opus on super nes wich was named ISS, competition started when I heard about tournaments and after a few good results, I didn't stop ever.

Nico: Do you think Christiano Ronaldo will look better than Thierry Henry on the cover of the next PES game ?
smaingerrard: He'll have style, he's a handsome bloke.
nonomel: He acts like a playboy in real life already, he'll certainly have a very stylish pose, more or less than Henry, it depends on everyone's own tastes...

Do you like football ? What are your favorite Teams and players ?
smaingerrard: Yes, I'm a big fan of Liverpool and especially of Steven Gerrard whom I took my nick from, smaingerrard
nonomel: Yes, I'm a big football fan, it goes along with playing PES anyway.
My favorite french teams are O.M (Marseille) and TFC (Toulouse), elsewhere, Chelsea, Milan AC and Real.

How do you use team settings in PES ? Do you have any personal strategies, with a certain player prone to counter attack or some tighter defense on someone ?
smaingerrard: No, I never use a strategy other than a normal 4-3-3 but I've lost a lot to players who use defensive strategies so I'm going to use one next year.
nonomel: I use a few different settings, especially in this version of PES, to play the Offside Trap and the team settings I set to B B or A A. But no strategies like counterattack

what would you say the main advantage of pes is over games such as ea's fifa series ?
nonomel: It simply is a much better game. More realistic, better goals, better technical dribbles, everything is just better
smaingerrard: PES is a football game. Much closer to reality.

Botch: How important is the shape of your players ?
nonomel: It's a very important parameter. You should always try and play the players that are in great shape. And when certain players turn Orange or Red, theyt can turn into weapons of mass destruction
smaingerrard: Well it does influence the game... Of course, if my Zlatan's on fire and his is blue, I'll have an advantage but most of the time, the best player wins

You say you've been playing PES since the first version of ISS came out on Super Nintendo but what made you a pro gamer ?
smaingerrard: I saw on the internet, by chance that a big tourney was about to be held in Paris with all the best players from France attending and I suscribed there and got lucky enough to win it
nonomel: We've been playing football games since the beginning, then you need some talent and ease for it to begin with and see how you can do in a competition environment. Everybody's got a limit, then there are very good player, like smain is and good players, as I am
smaingerrard: Then I thought I had at least a decent minimum level and results didn't prove me wrong

How long does it take to get used to a new version of PES ?
smaingerrard: Let's say a month to get into it, then we roll
nonomel: About a month is required to adapt but almost the whole season to master every trick and exploit every bug in the game

ti3um: Do you often score off free kicks ?
smaingerrard: Very few on this version, they are quite tough to master but I did score a few.
nonomel: It depends on the versions. In PES3 a lot, in the 4th less, in the 5th, very often and in this present version, none, as far as I'm concerned. But I've witnessed a few players who mastered them successfully.

Do you get the chance, as pro gamers, to test the new version of the game before it's released ?
smaingerrard: No, we don't have any advantage of this kind.
nonomel: Usually, we get the game slightly earlier, 1 month or so, generally, either by downloading it on the internet (I think it's not quite legal ^^) or by getting an exclusive version by Konami but that's not until the launching day. Then you can find a few gaming rooms that allow you to play it a bit earlier too.

BFM_Knight †+--- iPwn™: Will Beckham have the same hype now that he's in the LA Galaxy?
smaingerrard: I Don't know... I think he made a mistake signing there. Let's wait and see how he performs there...
nonomel: He'll still be very successful because he knows how to control his public image, but it's quite clear he will never get the titles he could have hoped for with Real Madrid, although it's been a while since Madrid won anything on the European stage.

Do you think you're going to play PES for a long while ?
smaingerrard: Honestly, I can't picture myself stopping playing it if I keep on having good results in tournaments. Once you're in, it's tough to get out.
nonomel: I think I'll never stop playing PES, even if I stop competing. Playing PES with friends is a competition. And I'll have to train my son so that he can become a champion after me.

Now Italy won the FifA world Cup last year, do you think italian players will be overrated in PES 2007 ?
smaingerrard: Idon't think so, but C.Ronaldo will probaably be a monster !
nonomel: Probably not. PES has a different way to think the stats of each players, close to the game named football manager. When Grece won the european cup, they still were not that good in PES. But their teamplay will be very high for sure.

Botch: Is it useful to play the new "Winning Eleven" to prepare for the new "PES" ?
smaingerrard: Yes, of course, it gives us a real close feeling about what the next PES will be like !
nonomel: Yes, even though new versions are always very different, it's always useful to learn the few new things that already appear in the Winning eleven game. This year, it should be quite different since the Winning eleven game released in august has nothing in common pretendingly, with the next PES2008... but we've been told this before, so I'll play anyway, besides it's still a new game to test.

Nico: What is it like when you play against amateurs ?
smaingerrard: Score can be very heavy but they are not used to playing at this level...
nonomel: Not very close games

Do you have a coach ?!
smaingerrard: Yes, Incloas is my manager... Oh no! My ex-manager now
nonomel: I'm my own coach, usually. During matches, it's always important to be cheered by people or just to have one friend supporting you, it can change the course of the game, sometimes.
