I played Fallout 2 first (going to start the original right after this is posted), and I gotta say it's awesome. I won't take a full stand on the topic of "games aging" just yet, but in the context of RRW and my personal opinion, if you enjoy the games back then, you very well may still enjoy them now (okay I just did take a stand, lol). Of course that is justified with many examples: Diablo series, cl-assic RPGs like Chrono Trigger, and any cl-assic or critically acclaimed game for that matter. In essence, the Fallout series is no different, it is referred to as a superb and groundbreaking RPG series.
I'm quite impressed with Fallout 2. I played the opening mission which basically serves as a training session for your character who is "the chosen one." Specific to the game, it's a set of "trials" to see if your character truly deserves the prestige and responsibilities of the previously mentioned moniker. Prior to this action, you of course, create your hero that will come out of the "vault."
I was impressed by this starting point alone. The beginning customization is quite deep with a copious amount of options. I spent nearly 45 minutes deciding what attributes, skills, and personality traits I would assign my character (named him "Ish" btw ). Despite the very monotone Dungeons and Dragons-like presentation of the trials mission, it was quite helpful and quite fun. I'm significantly adjusting to Fallout 2's interface and main gameplay. If you can't really picture how it plays, imagine what Diablo would be like if it was turn-based. Now hopefully that is not a turnoff for some of you, but in its purest form, Fallout 2 is definitely an RPG. I certainly want to get into it more, but I think I'm just going to playthrough the original first and get a firm grasp of the post-apocalyptic universe. Additionally, the replay value is noticed from the gate due to the vast variety of customization. I'm sure I'm going to make a few more characters, let alone how...
