F2P isn't very... free

Wowzers, what an experiment. After trying and actually playing a few F2P MMOs for an hour or two or 800, I'm exhausted. lol
Of course free to play is just a play on words, a marketing ploy. Nothing like that is free. Guild Wars is close, but still a buy to play, just no subscription, but you will have to buy full priced expansion packs, and they do have a cash shop, albeit only at their website. Guild Wars 2 is coming soon enough.
WoW and EQ2 have recently offered microtransaction items in a cash shop, in essence. Both have/had a mount for 25 USD. Sheesh, somewhat like Free Realms, you pay a monthly subscription and still have a cash shop for those items you want but surely don't need. Want... I want... I WANT IT ALL!! lmao
Christmas and birthdays mean so much more to kids these days than when I was a tween/teen. To buy virtual merchandise... depends on your concept of your own personal reality.
Damn, gaming is getting more and more expensive, and I need to upgrade my computer soon! x_x

I agree with you, though. F2P, while technically true, is just a hook to draw the gullible in to tease them with how much fun they could be having without calling what content new players are allowed to access a "demo" or "trial" of the game. Take DDO or now LOTRO for example. They allow you to have full access to the game and everything in it.... up to a certain level. Then there's absolutely nothing for you to do without buying a temporary "quest pack" or the like. Alternatively, you can pay the monthly subscription fee or buy a several hundred dollar "lifetime subscription", which completely removes the "free" part of the picture. Many more MMO's are coming out using that income style as well, I rally don't understand what the draw of it is, it's abhorrent to me, personally.
To be totally honest though, 90% of items in cash shops I see in most micro-currency driven games... don't appeal ot me in the slightest. The only cash shop items I've ever shown an interest in are 2 items in Runes of Magic (both of which I got on sale for a grand total of $15, bwuahaha), a full-set outfit on Asda Story which was not only way too expensive, but required almost max level which I never planned on attaining, and I'll admit to wanting and buying several items on the Guild Wars site (3 extra characters slots (planning on at least one more =P), 4 sets of aesthetic character costumes for each of my 2 accounts, a makeover credit pack, and a character renaming pack). With that said, I do have 2 full accounts, and I really don't mind putting so much money toward a game developer whose products I support wholeheartedly.
